The result is a specialized and critical habitat whose importance reaches far beyond its borders. Yet this extraordinary world between worlds is surprisingly fragile. Altering the delicate balance of water and temperature could be enough to disrupt and even destroy life in the intertidal zone and affect the health of the ecosystems it supports.
